Cycling in Costa Blanca Why Autumn is the Ideal Season

The Costa Blanca has long been a favourite destination for cyclists from across Europe. With its combination of mountain climbs, coastal views, and smooth roads, it provides the ideal setting for both training and leisure rides. While many riders head to the region during spring, autumn offers equally favourable conditions – and, for some, even better ones. This guide explains why autumn is such a good time to cycle in Costa Blanca, with practical insights for keen riders and cycling clubs planning their next trip.

Ideal Weather for Endurance Riding

From late September to early December, the Costa Blanca enjoys mild, stable weather. Average daytime temperatures range between 18 and 25°C, which is far more comfortable than the peak heat of July and August. The cooler climate reduces the risk of heat exhaustion, making it easier to complete longer endurance rides or back-to-back training days. There is also less humidity in the air, which many riders find improves breathing and overall performance. Occasional rain is possible, especially later in the season, but heavy downpours are rare, and roads tend to dry quickly.

Quiet Roads and Uncluttered Climbs

With the summer tourism season over, the roads are noticeably quieter in autumn. This makes for safer and more enjoyable rides, particularly on popular routes such as:

Coll de Rates – A classic climb with wide switchbacks and panoramic views. In autumn, you’re more likely to have the road to yourself.

Vall de Gallinera – A scenic loop through quiet villages and almond groves, best enjoyed without traffic.

Puerto de Tudons – Ideal for those seeking altitude, with long, steady gradients and minimal interruptions from vehicles.

Club cyclists will appreciate the chance to ride two-abreast without constant overtaking. It also gives more space for support vehicles, making group logistics simpler.

Longer Days Than You Might Expect

While the days start to shorten in autumn, the Costa Blanca still offers over 10 hours of daylight well into November. Sunrise is around 7:30 am and sunset just after 6:00 pm at that time of year. This gives plenty of scope for morning warm-ups, mid-ride café stops, and post-ride recovery without feeling rushed. For club cyclists training with structure, it’s still possible to manage multiple sessions each day – from fasted morning rides to afternoon hill repeats.

Better Availability and Prices on Accommodation

Accommodation options in autumn are usually easier to book, with more flexible rates and better value than in high season. Blanca Bikes’ own cycling-friendly accommodation in Javea as well as partner hotels in Calpe and Denia , for example, remains open throughout autumn and are equipped with bike storage, maintenance areas, and athlete-specific meal options. Fewer tourists in town also mean quieter evenings, shorter waits in restaurants, and more relaxed surroundings to recover in.

Autumn Colours and Varied Scenery

Autumn riding offers a fresh perspective on the Costa Blanca landscape. While the coast stays green year-round, inland valleys and hilltops begin to show signs of seasonal change. You’ll notice orange and yellow tones in the trees, especially around the Jalon Valley and Sierra Bernia. These routes combine coastal air with rural beauty – offering both climbing opportunities and rolling terrain ideal for tempo work. Photography-minded riders will find plenty of scenic opportunities, particularly in the early morning or late afternoon light.

Preparation for Winter Training and Spring Racing

Many club cyclists use autumn training camps as a bridge between summer riding and structured winter plans. The Costa Blanca allows you to maintain fitness with volume, while also keeping the riding enjoyable.

The terrain supports all kinds of training goals: Long aerobic base rides along the coast or through valleys, Climbing drills on established routes like Cumbre del Sol or Port de Bèrnia and recovery loops around Altea or Benissa with minimal elevation

With less wind than Mallorca and more consistent temperatures than the Canary Islands, Costa Blanca remains a reliable choice in the shoulder seasons.

Bike Hire Without Compromise

Travelling with a bike can be inconvenient, particularly with changing airline policies and baggage costs. Blanca Bikes offers a fleet of high-end Cervelo road, gravel and e-bikes for hire, with autumn being an ideal time to take advantage of this service.

Models include full carbon frames fitted with Shimano Ultegra or equivalent, ready for both recreational and performance use. Bikes are regularly serviced, and the hire includes options for pedal choice, setup preferences, and collection/drop-off from your accommodation. This makes autumn trips more practical for groups who want to fly light but still enjoy a premium ride experience.

Guided Rides and Local Knowledge

Autumn is a great time to book guided rides, especially if you’re new to the area or looking to challenge yourself with routes that are less known to tourists.

Blanca Bikes provides guided rides for all abilities, led by experienced local riders who know how to pace the climbs, find quiet backroads, and plan routes based on wind direction and elevation.

For club cyclists, this can help with:

  • Discovering new routes outside of the usual loops
  • Avoiding road closures or unexpected gravel sections
  • Receiving on-road coaching and pacing support

Guided rides also take pressure off the group organiser, allowing everyone to focus on riding rather than navigation.

Practical Travel and Transfers

Autumn flights into Alicante remain regular and are often cheaper than in summer. The airport is well connected to most UK cities, and transfer times to cycling hubs like Calpe, Altea, or Moraira are under 90 minutes. Blanca Bikes includes Alicante airport transfers as part of its cycling packages, with options for individual travellers and full club groups. Van space is available for bikes, luggage, and any extra kit.

For club cyclists and dedicated road riders, autumn is one of the most rewarding times to visit Costa Blanca. The combination of stable weather, open roads, and structured support from companies like Blanca Bikes makes it ideal for both training and leisure. Whether you’re planning a solo break, a small group getaway, or a full training camp, the season offers a quieter, more focused riding experience – without the intense heat or crowds of summer.

If you’re considering a trip, now’s a good time to plan your routes, book accommodation, and take advantage of off-peak pricing. For everything else, Blanca Bikes is on hand to provide bike hire, guided rides, and all the local knowledge you need.

Blanca Bikes now have a cafe, workshop and rental centre in Parcent. I've been to the cafe a couple of times and the food is excellent as is the coffee. I was there again today and arrived in need of help as I had just crashed off my bike and was bleeding, sore, and with a rather broken bike. The staff were phenomenal, I didn't need to ask for help, they came to the rescue as soon as they saw my state (which wasn't terrible). A first Aid kit was quickly made available as was a comfortable place to recover. Coffee was brought to me, more staff came to offer assistance. The mechanic, who was about to finish for the day came to check over my bike. The rear mech had been pushed into the spokes and neither wheel was spinning properly. He quickly fixed all these issues. I had arranged for my partner to come pick me up and when the mechanic saw us starting to dismantle the bike to get it in the car, he rushed over to help us again, neatly packing it in for us. Sometimes it takes a little crisis to realise and remember there are some wonderful people in this world, today I was reminded of this. A very big thank you to all at Blanca Bikes :-)

Great stay here for 2 weeks. Couldn’t have asked for anything more. Blancabikes looked after me and very well and took care of all my needs. This is a brilliant place to come to for training, and only being a 5 minute ride from the coast, you have all the cafes and restaurants you could ask for. I would seriously recommend to anyone looking a cycling getaway.

We used Bianca bikes for a transfer from Alicante to Calpe, 4 people with 4 bike boxes. Super slick, the driver was waiting for us in arrivals at the airport and we were straight into the private bus parked outside. They even helped us with a mechanical in Parcent on our last day free of charge. Thank you.

Unreal 3 days riding with Blanca! A very friendly and relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff, something for everyone. We were a group of 4 medium / keen cyclists and couldn’t have been better - some stupidly nice routes around the area, the bikes we were given the best bikes we’ve ever ridden and the breakfast in the morning sorted us right out. Couldn’t recommend this enough! Cheers to Nigel Peter and the rest of the team for sorting us out
